CYBER HYGIENE AWARENESS IN AGONA WEST MUNICIPALITY
On Monday, 8th September 2025, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) of Ghana, in collaboration with the Office of the Head of the Local Government Service, held a comprehensive cyber hygiene sensitisation programme for staff and citizens of the Agona West Municipality. This initiative aims to enhance public awareness of cyber threats and promote safe digital practices as part of Ghana’s broader agenda to bolster national cyber resilience.
The programme brought together key officials from the CSA, including Mr Eric Kafui Bansah, Principal Manager for Capacity Building and Awareness Creation; Mr Martin Aboagye Agyei, Manager for Child Online Protection; Mr Leslie Acquaye, Assistant Manager of the Computer Emergency Response Team; and Mr Bernard Bright Baah Essuman, Chief Support Officer for Communications.
Hon. Eric Gyamfi Odoom, Chief Executive of the Agona West Municipal District, welcomed the CSA team and praised the initiative. Drawing on his personal experience of cyber impersonation and fraudulent schemes targeting job seekers, he emphasized the value of sensitization in equipping citizens to protect themselves from similar threats.
During the event, Mr Eric Bansah presented statistics on Ghana’s evolving digital landscape and highlighted the dual nature of these advancements—offering opportunities while also exposing users to cyber vulnerabilities. He advised the public to exercise caution online, carefully manage the sharing of personal information, and remain alert to misleading and fraudulent content on social media.
Mr Leslie Acquaye focused on key security practices such as maintaining strong, unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and avoiding the sharing of mobile money PINs or one-time passwords (OTPs). He urged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly to their service providers and the CSA’s Cybercrime Incident Reporting Point.
Highlighting the protection of children online, Mr Martin Agyei addressed issues related to sextortion, cyberbullying, and online grooming. He emphasised that females are disproportionately targeted and advised parents and guardians to engage in regular conversations with their children about safe online behaviour and to monitor their digital activities conscientiously.
An interactive question-and-answer session followed, where participants shared concerns about account takeovers, sextortion, and mobile money scams. The CSA team reiterated the importance of timely reporting and proactive security measures, assuring continued collaboration with telecommunications providers, the Bank of Ghana, and law enforcement agencies to combat cybercrime effectively.
Complementing the sensitisation, CSA representatives participated in a live radio broadcast on Obrempon FM, conducted in both English and Fante, reaching an estimated audience of 50,000 across Agona West and neighbouring districts. The discussion covered common cyber threats and offered practical safety advice tailored to gender-specific vulnerabilities.
This sensitisation exercise represents a vital step in strengthening Ghana’s cybersecurity culture at the community level, equipping citizens with the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital world safely.
The CSA continues its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s digital future through education, awareness, and strategic partnerships across all levels of society.
